This June, Small unveiled his latest installment of the series, currently on view at the Brooklyn gallery space at Ilegal Mezcalwhich finds its subjects — all existing NY-based couples — in moments of both private and public intimacy.
No, literally. The kiss was quick, but it left an impression on the Trinidad-born, Queens-raised photographer. I wanted to focus more closely on what PDA really means and how it means different things depending on where and who you are.
When I picked it back up, my inspiration was to focus more on the ideas of the project than the imagery. Can you tell me a little about how the project has developed? Did that idea to show the different resonances of PDA reflect aspects of your own experience of it?

I did that by casting folks off the street as well as couples through an open call. But going to school in Atlanta, then in Mississippi for a year, I got to see really different environments. Shooting people like Jonah and Ethan in Bushwick was very comfortable.
Kadar R. Small saw two Black boys kiss in public for the first time when he was It was at a bonfire party, early in his 10th grade year at Arabia Mountain, a private, historically Black high school just outside Atlanta. The result is a collection of images that uses the lens of PDA to offer tender, yet subversive portraits of queer relationships in action.
